David Barsamian, an internationally-known investigative journalist and author, will lead a public discussion following this week’s CineCulture screening of “Kasheer: Art Culture and the Struggle for Azadi,” at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30  in the Leon S. and Pete P. Peters Educational Auditorium (5010 N. Woodrow Avenue).

Barsamian also will give the presentation “Terrorism, Propaganda and the Media,” at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan.29 in the Industrial Technology Building, room 101. Both events are free and open to the public.

The 51-minute film explores the perspectives of three artists living in the disputed territory of the Kashmir Valley. Each reflects on their lives, past experiences with the insurgency and the history of the secluded conflict zone in the Indian Himalayas.

Barsamian is familiar with the Kashmir territory and conflict. He reported on the Kashmir resistance against Indian rule in 2009 and 2010. A frequent visitor of India and fluent speaker of Hindu and Urdu, Barsamian was deported from the Kashmir when he was accused of violating his visa by reporting on the conflict-torn territory.

CineCulture is a film series that promotes cultural awareness through free, public film and post-screening discussions. Parking is not enforced after 4 p.m. on Fridays.
