California Gov. Jerry Brown will join many of California’s top political leaders at a reception to support the Kenneth L. Maddy Institute at Fresno State, 6 p.m. February 11 at the Old Senator Hotel (1121 “L” Street, Sacramento, California 95814).

Gov. Brown will join Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon, Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff, Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins and Assembly Republican Leader Kristin Olsen to raise money for the institute’s Bob Beverly Sacramento Legislative Intern Scholarship Program, which provides students the opportunity to work with legislators of both parties at the State Capitol. Willie Brown, former speaker of the assembly and mayor of San Francisco, will serve as master of ceremonies.

“We are delighted with this bipartisan show of support in the spirit of Ken Maddy,” said Maddy Institute board chairman Larry Martin.

Individual tickets for the reception are $250 and sponsorships are available. All donations are tax deductible.

Legislative internships were a key priority for the late State Sen. Ken Maddy. “One of the things we want to do is get young people involved in politics. The institute should teach students about the complexity of a democracy at work and the passionate issues that motivate constituents and their elected representatives,” he said.

Since 2001, the Maddy Institute has given over 300 legislative intern scholarships to students. Maddy Institute legislative interns have worked in nearly 30 federal and state legislative offices throughout the Valley, in Sacramento and in Washington, D.C. Maddy Institute alumni now work in a variety of political offices, businesses and non-profit organizations.

The Maddy Institute was established by a unanimous vote of the California Legislature in 1999 to honor Senator Maddy for 28 years of public service.

The Legislative Scholar Program is one of several Maddy Institute programs. Other programs include:

  • The Maddy Report: A weekly 30-minute public affairs television program that airs on the Valley’s PBS affiliate, Fresno’s NBC affiliate and statewide on The California Channel
  • El Informe Maddy: A weekly 30-minute public affairs Spanish language television program that airs on the Valley’s Univision affiliate.
  • Maddy Daily: A daily public affairs e-newsletter with over 12,000 subscribers
  • Maddy Report – Valley Views Edition: A weekly one-hour public affairs program on KMJ-AM 940
