Fresno State’s spring CineCulture film series begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23 with a showing of the award-winning, French-Canadian film “Gabrielle.”FSNgabrielle

The free, public event will be hosted in the Leon S. and Pete P. Peters Educational Center in the Student Recreational Center (west of the Save Mart Center on Shaw and Woodrow avenues).

The CineCulture film series and academic courses are part of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism in the College of Arts and Humanities. The weekly screenings are followed by an open public discussion on the underlying theme, content and matter of the film.

CineCulture also works in conjunction with Fresno Filmworks to screen select films off campus.

“Gabrielle” is the story of a young woman with Williams Syndrome whose love of life touches everyone. She participates in a choir of developmentally disabled adults and begins a romantic relationship with her choir mate, Martin. However, their families are fearful of their blossoming relationship and Gabrielle also must confront her own limitations in the hope of experiencing love.

Since premiering at the Locarno Film Festival in 2013, the 104-minute film has received numerous accolades, including representing Canada at the 2014 Oscars for Best Movie in a Foreign Language.

After the screening, Dr. Rose Marie Kuhn, coordinator and professor of Fresno State’s French program, will lead the public discussion.

The remaining CineCulture spring schedule includes these free, public screenings at 5:30 p.m. in the Peters Educational Center (unless otherwise indicated):
