University Theatre at Fresno State will present the regional premiere of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Water by the Spoonful,” Mar. 13 – 21 (except Mar. 16) at the Dennis and Cheryl Woods Theatre in the Speech Arts building.

Show times will be at 8 p.m. except the 2 p.m. matinee Sunday, Mar. 15.

Written by Quiara Alegría Hudes and directed by Theater Arts professor, Kathleen McKinley, the play depicts a scattered collection of recovering addicts who seek safe haven in an online chatroom. Through jokes and gentle bullying, they create a virtual family. But when an Iraq War vet’s real-world family crisis spills over into the cyberworld, everything changes.

An ethnically diverse cast of student actors bring to life Hudes’ richly drawn ensemble of misfits, and the action spans the globe, including: a Puerto Rican rainforest, a Japanese cyber-café, a San Diego IRS office and a North Philadelphia row home.

“Water by the Spoonful,” which won the Pulitzer in 2012, contains adult language and haze (simulated fog effects). Hudes is also the author of the Tony Award Winning musical “In the Heights.”

Tickets are $17 for adults; $15 for Fresno State faculty, staff, alumni and military; and $10 for students. Group rates are also available. Box office hours are noon-4 p.m. on weekdays and one hour before curtain. There will be no late admission or re-admission.

Parking is free for shows after 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday night. For the shows on Mar. 17, 18 and 19, parking permits are required and may be purchased at dispensers in parking lots on campus.
