Eduardo Briceno of Mindset Works will deliver the keynote talk at Fresno State’s 31st annual Conference on Character and Civic Education on Friday, March 13 at the Fresno Convention Center, where 19 area middle and high schools also will be honored for exemplary character education programs.

The conference is presented by the Fresno State’s Kremen School of Education and Human Development and its Bonner Center for Character Education. Student teachers from Fresno State and Fresno Pacific University will emphasize the ethical implications and obligations of professional educators.

It is the longest running character education conference in the United States, said Dr. Jacques S. Benninga, a Kremen School professor who is co-coordinator with Ms. Jane Moosoolian and Dr. Susan Schlievert.

The Character and Civic Education Conference provides hundreds of prospective teachers with information on local civic agencies devoted to assisting children and families with life issues. It them presents them with ethical issues facing today’s teachers and professionally appropriate ways of dealing with those issues as well as strategies to enhance strengths in their students.

“The conference provides Fresno State and Fresno Pacific student teachers with a number of important concepts and considerations related to the ethical implications of what teachers do as professional educators and to reinforce for them their vital role as shapers of children’s character,” Benninga said.

The day will feature two general sessions and 30 breakout sessions. The awards program for exemplary Valley schools of character follows Briceno’s talk which is during the 8:30 a.m. General Session.

Middle schools that will be recognized are Abraham Lincoln of Selma; John F. Kennedy Jr. of Hanford; Sutter of Fowler; Washington Academic of Sanger and Mulcahy of Tulare. Fresno middle schools participating are Kings Canyon, Scandinavian, Sequoia, Tehipite and Wawona. Honored from Central Unified of Fresno will be El Capitan, Glacier, Point and Rio Vista.
