“I am deeply saddened by the untimely death of my friend, President Tony Cantú,” said Dr. Joseph I. Castro, Fresno State president, in announcing the tribute today.

“He was a good man who cared about students and he served the Fresno City College community well.  My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues at the State Center Community College District.”

President Cantú, a longtime professor and administrator who became Fresno City College’s 10th president on April 3, 2012, graduated from Fresno State in 1985, earning a master of arts in Linguistics ESL. He also earned a master of arts in French and a dual bachelor of arts in French and Spanish from California State University, Long Beach.

Fresno City College announced the passing of President Cantú on Monday. A campus memorial service was held at FCC Tuesday and one is scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m. in St. John’s Cathedral in downtown Fresno.

President Castro’s flag directive applies to the three locations on campus where flags are posted — the Thomas Building Rose Garden, the North Gym and the Save Mart Center — and university athletic venues.
