The Fresno State Police Department is investigating the apparent tampering of a plaque at the Armenian Genocide Memorial Monument on campus that was reported on Friday afternoon (July 24).

The plaque was discovered unbolted, but not taken from the memorial. The plaque, made of steel and weighing approximately 50 lbs., will be re-installed this week.

The displaced plaque was reported by two individuals who noticed it at about 3:30 p.m. Friday. Debbie Adishian-Astone, interim Vice President for Administration, said it appears the incident may have been an attempted theft for salvage value, but the weight may have prevented it from being carried away.

“We appreciate that some individuals who were walking by the monument at the time noticed the displaced plaque and reported the situation to University Police who then contacted Facilities staff to pick up the plaque for safekeeping until it could be re-installed,” she said.

President Joseph I. Castro issued this statement:  “I am saddened by the recent attempted theft at our beautiful Armenian Genocide Memorial Monument. I ask the campus and community to join together in protecting our historic monument.”
