The  Fresno-Clovis Walk to End Alzheimer’s from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept.12, at Fresno State’s Maple Mall is expected to draw nearly 2,000 participants.

The event is part of a movement to reclaim the future for millions and overcome this growing epidemic that is the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death said Barbara Tanimoto, special event manager for the walk.

“As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate. Today more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s, and we expect that number to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050,” Tanimoto said.

She reports that as of Friday, the local campaign has raised $271,308 – more than 90 percent of its goal of $300,000 — with 125 registered teams and 1,171 registered walkers.

People can still register on walk day. There is no fee but participants are asked to fundraise. Campus parking is free on weekends.

Saturday’s events begin with registration at 8 a.m., followed by the Promise Flower Ceremony at 9:15 a.m. to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

The 1.2 mile walk on campus begins at 9:30 a.m. During closing remarks at 11 a.m. they will announce the winner of a trip to Monterey.

The event features entertainment, a Kids Zone, mascots, food court, memory wall, corporate sponsors and a special tribute to those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer’s.

At the event, participants can learn about Alzheimer’s disease and how to get involved with the cause, from advocacy opportunities and clinical studies enrollment to support programs and services.
