College bookstores across the nation will observe National Student Day this week, including Fresno State from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8,at Memorial Court in front of the Kennel Bookstore as part of the Homecoming Week 2015 activities.

The Kennel Bookstore and the Student Involvement Office are teaming up for the major college observance designed to celebrate students nationwide and to encourage them to volunteer in local community projects.

In July, Fresno State announced it reached a new milestone in community service by students, faculty, staff and administrators during the 2014-15 academic year, volunteering a record 1,324,843 hours of service, and for the sixth consecutive year, logging more than 1 million hours of service in a single year. A total of 14,910 volunteers spent time serving local community benefit organizations and community events in the past academic year.

For National Student Day Thursday, several service projects will be available to kick off student community service involvement.

In addition to free food and games, a social media competition will be held throughout the week with chances to win a $500 bookstore gift card and a National Student Day t-shirt.

Festivities will include free hotdogs, chips and  drinks, games, music from Q97 radio station, a photo booth, sampling of Pepsi products and the chance for students to win prizes in competition events. They can win Student Swag Packs that include essential items like scantrons, coffee and top ramen.

An inflatable bungee run and a boxing ring also will be available for students’ enjoyment.

Students can post original photos through social media using the hashtag #FSNSD15 all week leading up to Thursday’s event:

  • on Monday, they posted pictures depicting what keeps them motivated during the week;
  • on Tuesday, they can submit a photo doing something scholarly;
  • on Wednesday, they can show off an “A” grade recently earned in a class; and
  • on Thursday, they can post a selfie of themselves celebrating National Student Day at one of the participating booths.

For the $500 gift card to the bookstore, students enter the contest by snapping a selfie inside the Kennel Bookstore and posting it to social media using the hashtags #GIVEME5NSD and #FSNSD15.

Every entry will yield a $1 donation to Reading is Fundamental, an organization that promotes literacy among children.
