Fresno State’s CineCulture film series continues with a presentation of “Dukhtar” at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, in the Leon S. and Pete P. Peters Educational Center (west of Save Mart Center in the Student Recreation Center) followed with a discussion led by film producer Shrihari Sathe. Director Afia Nathaniel’s feature debut follows a young mother’s risky decision to flee from a mountainous region of Pakistan with her 10-year-old daughter, who was betrothed to a man six times her age. Filmed on location in Punjab, “Dukhtar” explores the issue of marrying child brides and the lengths a mother goes to fight for freedom. “Dukhtar” was Pakistan’s Official Submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards. The 93-minute film is in Urdu and Pushto with English subtitles. The Middle East Studies Program is the co-sponsor for the screening. All CineCulture events on campus are free and open to the public.
