The Paycheck Fairness Act will be the topic of a lecture by the Fresno State Women’s Studies Program at 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5 in the Education Building, room 140.

The event features guest speaker Aileen Rizo-Acosta, a math consultant who is involved in a lawsuit for equal pay against her employer, the Fresno County Office of Education. Her case has received national attention, including an in-depth report by Maria Shriver.

The Paycheck Fairness Act amends the portion of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 (FLSA) known as the Equal Pay Act to revise remedies for, enforcement of and exceptions to prohibitions against sex discrimination in the payment of wages.

The Women’s Studies free, public event comes in light of recent failed legislative efforts to work toward pay equality, said Dr. Larissa Mercado-Lopez, assistant professor in the program and event coordinator.

“The event is to draw attention to a local struggle for pay equality that has garnered national attention,” Mercado-Lopez said.

Rizo-Acosta will discuss her story as well as her ongoing efforts as an equal pay advocate for all women.

The primary mission of Women’s Studies Program is to analyze how gender is constructed through a variety of social institutions and cultural processes so that gender inequality can be dismantled.
