Rodrigo Reyes, a Merced resident and independent film director, will discuss the film “Fogo” following its 5:30 p.m. screening on Thursday, Oct. 8, at Fresno State.

“Fogo,” which will be shown in the Alice Peters Auditorium (Peters Business Building, Room 191), is the second film screened as part of the lineup for the Third Annual Latin American Film Festival.

Reyes’ documentary, “Purgatorio: A Journey into the Heart of the Border,” was released in 2013 and screened at more than 40 international film festivals, winning several awards.

Reyes was named one of the 25 New Faces of Independent Film by Filmmaker Magazine in 2013, and was a recipient of the Cannon Filmmaker Award from Film Independent.

Born in Mexico City, Reyes moved at age 6 to Merced, where he works as a certified Spanish language Interpreter for the California Superior Court.

The 61-minute film takes place in the small community of Fogo Island, Newfoundland.

The Canadian-Mexican production shows how the area has been devastated by the tundra, forcing residents to leave.

The screening is part of Hispanic Heritage Month, a month-long observance concluding with the film “Que Horas Ela Volta.”

“Fogo” is presented by the Chicano and Latin American Studies Department, and sponsored by the College of Social Sciences, the Department of Political Science and the Consulado de México en Fresno.
