Fresno State observes its second annual National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week Nov. 16-20 with several events, including the Food Security Project table where students can learn about the University’s services and pick up a healthy snack from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, in the Satellite Student Union.

The week is co-sponsored by the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness at campuses and communities across the nation. About 750 campuses participated last year.

Wednesday’s event is part of the Student Health and Counseling Center Wellness Fair, where programs and services will share health tips with students.

Other Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week events at Fresno State include:

  • Nov. 18, 5:30-7:30 p.m. — The Food Security Project will host a special viewing of “A Place at the Table” in the Peters Education Center. This film shows how hunger poses economic, social and cultural implications for the U.S. and how making healthy food available and affordable is important.
  • Nov. 19, 8:30-9:15 a.m. and 3:30-4:45 p.m. — Several sociology classes will present research and visual displays on hunger and homelessness while promoting awareness with interactive activities at the speakers platform in the Free Speech Area.
  • Nov. 19, various times — Students in public health classes will spread awareness on campus with information about food insecurity and healthy snacks.

Also ongoing at Fresno State through Dec. 18 is the “Farm to Fork: Food, Family, Farming” exhibition in the Leon S. Peters Ellipse Gallery on the second floor of the Henry Madden Library.

The exhibit features the immigration history of the Valley’s largest ethnic populations — Armenians, Basque, Chicanos and Southeast Asians — and their contributions to agriculture in the Valley.

Fresno State’s Food Security Services includes the Student Cupboard, a food and hygiene pantry for Fresno State students that opened a year ago and is housed in the Grosse Industrial Technology Building, Room 144 (Barstow Avenue and Jackson Drive). Students can receive free food and hygiene projects for themselves and members of their family.

For more information, call the Student Cupboard at 559.278.6621.
