The Master of Fine Arts Program in Creative Writing at Fresno State will feature three accomplished poets in its Spring 2016 Reading Series with the Fresno Poets’ Association. Each of the readings will start at 7 p.m. in the Alice Peters Auditorium (Peters Business building, Room 191) inside the University Business Center. Admission and parking are free in suggested lots P5 and P6.
Friday, Feb. 12 — Dennis Maloney
As editor and publisher of White Pine Press in Buffalo, New York, Maloney’s poetry collections are “Just Enough” and “The Map is Not the Territory.” He has translated the works of Pablo Neruda, Antonio Machado, Ryōkan Taigu, Juan Ramón Jiménez and others. His new book, “Listening to Tau Yuan Ming” from Glass Lyre Press, includes translations of the Chinese poet’s well known “Twenty Poems After Drinking Wine” plus his own poetry and reflections.
Friday, Feb. 26 — Christine Poreba
The winner of the 2014 Philip Levine Prize in Poetry contest, Poreba’s debut poetry collection “Rough Knowledge” is from Anhinga Press. Her works have appeared in the journals The Southern Review, The Sun Magazine and The Pinch, as well as in “Let in the Stars,” an anthology of new poems for children. She has held numerous residencies, including a Florida Individual Artist Fellowship, and she teaches English as a Second Language to adults in Tallahassee, Florida.
Friday, April 15 — Gary Young
An illustrator and master printer of Greenhouse Review Press, Young’s poetry collections include the recent “Even So: New and Selected Poems,” “No Other Life,” “The Dream of a Moral Life” and others. His honors include the Shelley Memorial Award from the Poetry Society of America, two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, a Pushcart Prize, the James D. Phelan Award and more. He teaches creative writing and directs the Cowell Press at University of California, Santa Cruz. The Fresno Poets’ Association is a decades-old reading series that features poetry and prose readings in conjunction with the Creative Writing Program and the College of Arts and Humanities at Fresno State.
