Diversity Week: ‘Cultural Tapestry’ Web Site Unveiled Thursday (4/3)

“Cultural Tapestry of the Valley” -- a new Web site designed to reflect and celebrate the cultural diversity of Fresno State, the local community and Central Valley -- was unveiled today as part of Diversity Week 2003 at Fresno State.  The Web Site Preview in University Center, room 202 was presented by Juan Lucero of University Relations, Carole Snee Services for Students with Disabilities and Candace Egan of the Academic Innovation Center.  Information:  (559) 278-7674. Mudd Prof To Discuss "Slippery Solutions" At April 3 Math Lecture

Jon Jacobsen from Harvey Mudd College will speak at Fresno State on Thursday, Apr. 3 from 4-5 p.m. in the Agricultural Sciences Building, room 109 (2415 E. San Ramon).  His talk, "Slippery Solutions" will explore fundamental processes of the natural world based on partial differential equations. Through demonstrations with soap film, his lecture will study minimal surfaces and vibrations of membranes. Info 278-2992.

Jumpstart For A Day is Saturday (April 5)

Jumpstart For A Day will be held at Fresno State on Saturday, April 5 from noon to 5 p.m. in the grassy area west of the Joyal Administration building (5150 N. Maple).  Jumpstart For A Day is a free learning fair that gives Jumpstart families a chance to participate in a day of fun and to enjoy educational arts and crafts activities, children's entertainers, storytelling, pony rides, food and more. ‘Becoming Evil’ Lecture is April 10

Dr. James Waller, psychology professor at Whitworth College in Spokane will speak on Thursday, April 10 at 7:30 p.m. on "Becoming Evil: How Ordinary People Can Commit Genocide and Mass Killing" in the Grosse Industrial Technology (2255 E. San Ramon) at Fresno State.  Admission is free and open to the public. Information: 278-2669.  

Voice Majors Recital: The Songs of Hugo Wolf set for April 13

The Department of Music at California State University, Fresno presents voice majors from the studios of both Prof. Helene Joseph-Weil and Geoffrey Friedley in a special recital featuring "The Songs of Hugo Wolf," Sunday, April 13 at 3 p.m. in the Wahlberg Recital Hall in the Music Building (2380 E. Keats Ave.). The concert commemorates the centennial of the death of Hugo Wolf, the great Austrian German art song composer who lived from 1860-1903.  For ticket information, call 278-2654. 

Africana Cultural Night is Friday (April 4)

Africana Students United present Africana Cultural Night on Friday, April 4 featuring dance, music, fashion from 6 to 10 p.m. in the Satellite Student Union (2485 E. San Ramon Ave.) at Fresno State. 100 Tranquility, Cantua Youngsters ‘Going To College’ April 9

The “I’m Going To College” Early Awareness Program   culminates a three-month project at the University Business Center at Fresno State on Wednesday, April 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. when 100 fourth and fifth graders from Tranquility and Cantua Elementary schools will visit the campus to fully indulge and experience college.   Information: (559) 294-6650 or 278-2048.

Kappa Alpha Theta Golf Tournament April 12 Benefits C.A.S.A.

The third annual Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity Golf Tournament will be held on April 12 at Airways Municipal Golf Course (5440 E. Shields Ave.) in Fresno. Proceeds for the event, sponsored by Kappa’s Gamma Chi Chapter of Fresno State, go to Court Appointed Special Advocate (C.A.S.A.), an organization of trained community volunteers appointed by a judge to speak up for abused and neglected children in court. Craig School Of Business Golf Tournament is April 18

The 8th annual Craig School of Business Golf Tournament, hosted by the Alumni and Friends of the Craig School of Business, will be held Friday, April 18 from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Riverbend Golf Course in Fresno.  Proceeds from the tournament, which will feature members of the Fresno State Golf Team and President John D. Fresno State Offers Scholarships to 3 Science Fair Winners

Three Clovis West High School students who had winning projects at the 50th annual Central California Regional Science, Mathematics and Engineering Fair have been offered scholarships for $2,000 to attend California State University, Fresno when they finish high school.

Diversity Week 2003 is April 1-6 at Fresno State

California State University, Fresno will celebrate its cultural richness during Diversity Week 2003 from April 1-6 with a host of activities highlighted by the annual Cesar E. Chavez observance April 3 and a University Lecture Series presentation by poet Sonia Sanchez on April 1. Other activities include Africana Cultural Night, a discussion on Judaism, a Cultural Food Festival, a talk on disability culture, a Filipino Cultural Night and workshops on cultural competency training and prejudice reduction as well as several art displays. CSU Activates Plans for Students, Employees on Military Leave

California State University campuses will continue to operate on a normal schedule, unless specifically directed otherwise, while the United States is at war with Iraq. CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed announced today. Additionally, Reed has sent to campus presidents the policies that pertain to students and employees called to military service. Teacher Recruitment Fair is April 3

The annual Teacher Recruitment Fair sponsored by California State University, Fresno will be held on Thursday, April 3 in the Fresno Convention Center New Exhibit Hall from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. About 600 students are expected to attend with 66 districts represented. Collegiate Wind Band Festival is April 5 and 6

The 23rd Annual Collegiate Wind Band Festival will be held April 5 and 6 at California State University, Fresno. More than 1,000 College and University musicians from 10 schools will perform both afternoons before a panel of three university conductor/clinicians both days. An evening concert will be held   Saturday, April 5 featuring the Wind Ensembles from CSU, Long Beach and Fresno State. The Guitar Festival 2003, featuring a variety of guitar concerts and a Masterclass/workshop session will be held at California State University, Fresno beginning on Wednesday, April 9 at 8 p.m. in the Wahlberg Recital Hall of the new Music Building (2380 E. Keats Ave.) with the Fresno State Guitar Ensemble in concert. Summer Arts to Feature Emmy, Grammy, and Academy Award Winners

The Summer Arts Program 2003 promises to be a reunion of Emmy, Grammy, and Academy Award winners such as Keaton Walker, Mark Watters, Carmen Bradford, Nicholas Payton   and Fresno’s Pamela Wallace. They will be among100 renowned guest artists coming to the Fresno State campus to teach 18 intensive workshops in seven arts areas during the From June 29 through July 26. California State University, Fresno has announced a communications plan for students and employees should an emergency occur in the United States that affects the campus resulting from the military action now under way in Iraq.

National Youth Storytelling Olympics is April 11 and 12

The seventh annual National Youth Storytelling Olympics (NYSO) will be held in California for the first time this year on April 11 and 12 at California State University, Fresno and Hanford High School featuring 13 students from across the country. The event, sponsored by Fresno State, East Tennessee State University and Voices Across America, has been held in Tennessee the last seven years but is now moving to California. On Friday, April 11, it will be held at the Wahlberg Recital Hall in the Fresno State Music Building (2380 E. Keats). On Saturday, April 12 it will be at the Hanford High Presentation Center (120 East Grangeville Blvd.). Both shows begin at 7 p.m. and are open to the public. Commencement Set For May 17 

The 92nd Commencement at California State University, Fresno will be held on Saturday, May 17 – one week earlier than in previous years.  The university Commencement begins at 8:30 a.m. in Bulldog Stadium and generally runs approximately two hours.  Cap and gowns and more information for students will become available in the Kennel Bookstore on Monday and Tuesday (March 17 and 18) when the annual Alumni Association Grad Fair will he held. A general information pamphlet will also be available later this month in the bookstore or online.   A full schedule of celebrations and ceremonies that are held the week preceding Commencement will be released this week also.
