We're a campus community that treasures scholarship and creative thinking. Our  Smittcamp Family Honors College, one of the most comprehensive academic honors program at any university in California, has graduated more than 240 students since it accepted its first class in 1999. Currently 194 students are enrolled with scholarships that cover tuition, registration, fees, book allowance and housing. Only the best students from across California can meet the rigorous intellectual and creative requirements for the college. Students are admitted as a group and take a series of specially designed honors courses. The honors college is funded through a $2 million gift from Fresno's Smittcamp family. We seek out the best students for our academic programs.

Our wine keeps winning and winning and winning...Fresno State operates the only commercial winery at any university in the country. That's only one indication of our unique role in the heart of the world's premier agricultural region. Our College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology is one of the most highly regarded in the U.S. The university's enology program consistently wins top awards at national competitions, outscoring many of  the best Northern California wines.

The Save Mart Center at California State University, Fresno is one of the West Coast's premier events centers, hosting not only Bulldog Athletics, but also local sporting events like the Fresno Falcons hockey games, and internationally acclaimed entertainers. The building also had additional features added like a center for business innovation and a student recreational center. Best of all, the building was paid for through donations and sponsorships - not state funds.

Fresno State's Save Mart Center Ranked 10th in the World

Who Performs at

Fresno State?
Well, Fresno State's event center has featured rock legends the Rolling Stones, Prince, Britney Spears, opera great Andrea Bocelli, Bob
Dylan, Elton John, Aerosmith, KISS, Matchbox Twenty, Simon and Garfunkel, Shania Twain, Madonna ... and that's a short list.

Fresno State boasts some of the best sports programs for both women and men in California, with all major sports facilities paid for entirely with private gifts. The college regularly dominates in sports such as football, women's softball, and basketball. Our  equestrian team has nearly 100 members and is one of the strongest in the United States. Our booster group, the vaunted  "Red Wave," is one of the largest in the country. For years Fresno State's  Bulldog Foundation has led the nation in fundraising, exclusively using volunteers.

My, my...even Sports Illustrated thinks Fresno is pretty unique.

The complete spectrum of education is represented on campus, from a nationally ranked preschool to doctoral work. The campus includes University High School,  which uses music as the inspiration for its curriculum. Fresno State got its start as a "teacher's college," a tradition we proudly carry on today as one of California's top campuses for the preparation of new teachers.  Fresno State's renowned  Science & Mathematics Education Center Teacher Education Project, funded by the National Science Foundation has recruited at least 200 students and helped them graduate with majors in math or science plus a teaching credential. Fresno State is also home to the California State University Summer Arts program. This  multidisciplinary systemwide program offers academic credit plus a festival in the visual, performing, and literary arts. The academic component offers two-week residency courses for undergraduates, graduates, and professionals in creative writing, dance, music, film, video, theatre, performance, visual arts, design, arts education, and new technology.

Fresno State is the California campus most associated with the Sierra Nevada. Students can leave the campus and in one hour be skiing or hiking at 7,000 feet in Kings Canyon or Sequoia national parks. Yosemite National Park is a little over two hours away.  State Route 168, which adjoins the campus, links directly to Sierra Summit Ski Resort and numerous quaint mountain communities. The campus conducts research in Sierra and rangeland conservation, alpine biology, ecology, anthropology and numerous other disciplines. Our Department of Earth and Environmental Science classes have explored the Sierra Nevada, and our environmental sciences students have participated in a wide variety of research projects throughout the region. Fresno State has the only university experimental range to research commercial livestock production and patterns and processes working in the ecosystem of the Sierra Nevada.

Another fascinating fact: Fresno State's Downing Planetarium is the largest free-standing planetarium at any CSU campus in California.

At the deepest point, Kings Canyon is several thousand feet deeper than the Grand Canyon.

Kings Canyon National Park is located just east of Fresno and gives easy access to the Sierra Nevada backcountry. At its deepest point, Kings Canyon is thousands of feet deeper than the Grand Canyon. The park's Visitor's Center, at 6,500 feet, is a one-hour drive from Fresno State.

Research is booming at Fresno State, where faculty are attracting a growing amount of support for studies ranging from how to use new technologies to improve the skills of K-12 teachers to groundbreaking experiments in cell genetics and volcanology. Fresno State has 13 endowed chairs that support top-flight research and teaching. The range of funded projects makes the Fresno State's Office of Research and Sponsored Programs one of the largest in California. Another example of practical research:  our professors teamed up with one of the leading international software companies to help develop a computer-based system to identify criminals

Students are leaving an incredible legacy to Fresno State -- one of the best equipped student rec centers in the countryThe university is moving toward being a "green campus" in several ways, such as using solar power, providing alternative transportation for students, and planning for environment-friendly building options and strategies. Students at Fresno State are actively involved incampuswide elections. They overwhelmingly approved the Legacy 2000 referendum, paving the way for the recently completed huge new on-campus recreational center in the Save Mart Center. This was one of the few successful student referenda in California that year; others were rejected by student voters. Fresno State students are active, involved and willing to make the personal commitment to improve their campus.

Alumni from Fresno State are setting the pace throughout the country and the state. Among California State University campuses we can boast that our alumni are among the most influential thinkers, business people, artists, explorers and leaders in the U.S.

Our students truly make Fresno State unique. Central California is one of the most culturally diverse regions in the world. In the past, farming drew people from throughout the world to the San Joaquin Valley - from Armenia, Mexico, Germany, Cambodia, Sweden and Japan. As the region has grown larger and more cosmopolitan than its original farming roots, that cultural richness has remained. Now more than 120 different languages are spoken by our residents. Some of the largest cultural events in the world are held here.  And there's a richness of artistic expression in writing, poetry, the visual arts, music and dance that matches any of California's largest cities.  Diversity at Fresno State is not only appreciated but promoted and celebrated through the 1st Generation Web site, a place where students and faculty who are the first in their family to go to college are encouraged to write and share their stories.
