Free hearing evaluations at campus lab

The Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Studies at California State University, Fresno has opened a new audiology lab with $200,000 in state-of-the-art equipment and facility upgrades and is offering free comprehensive hearing evaluations for the public.

The new facility will serve community members who are uninsured, underinsured or interested in getting a non-pressured second opinion to obtain thorough examinations and recommendations.

Hearing disorders are a growing problem affecting the quality of life for millions of Americans. Based on recent data from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, approximately 28 million Americans suffer from mild loss to total loss of hearing.

Intervention services are critical to respond to the needs of individuals with hearing impairments and can identify specific technologies that assist individuals to function better in their daily lives.

The Fresno State audiology lab is one of only two clinics in Central California to offer such services. The only other clinic is at Children’s Hospital Central California. Fresno State can serve more than 100 people each semester and perform hearing evaluations on clients as young as 3.

Graduate students who are studying speech pathology and deaf education at Fresno State can obtain their clinical experience and increase their professional development skills by working with the latest diagnostic technology and patients in the lab.

Working under the direction of Dr. Cynthia Cavazos, faculty in the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Studies and clinical supervisor of the lab, students learn first-hand about hearing disorders and their treatment.

“With this new diagnostic audiologic equipment, our students now will be able to gain experience in specialty areas that were not previously available,” said Cavazos.“ In turn, we will be able to provide a wider array of audiological services to the community.”

The audiology lab, now located in the Psychology and Human Services Building, is funded by the College of Health and Human Services at Fresno State. Appointments may be scheduled by calling Lynn Campbell at 559.278.2422.
