Children’s author ‘Lemony Snicket’ to visit Fresno State

America’s bestselling children’s author, Daniel Handler, whose 12-part “A Series of Unfortunate Events” is purported to be the work of “Lemony Snicket,” will speak at California State University, Fresno on March 27 as part of the University Lecture Series.

The program is at 7:30 p.m. in the Satellite Student Union, 2485 E. San Ramon Ave.

“A Series of Unfortunate Events" has sold more than 27 million books worldwide. The first three books were made into a hit movie, “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” starring Jim Carrey and Meryl Streep. Released in 2004, the film grossed more than $200 million worldwide.

“The Bad Beginning” kicked off the series and featured the tragic and comic adventures of the Baudelaire orphans Violet, Klaus and Sunny and their escape from their wicked guardian and a variety of other villains who seek to steal their fortune. The series was supposed to draw to conclusion with the book “The End,” published Oct. 13, 2006, but the author had another surprise in store and the final book is still to be published.

Handler, a San Francisco novelist, musician and screenwriter, originated the "Lemony Snicket" pseudonym for mailing lists of several right-wing organizations he was researching for a novel, “The Basic Eight.” When he found himself writing children's books, he decided to use the same name to add an air of mystery to proceedings.

Tickets are available at the University Student Union Information Center in advance for $10, general admission; $6, Fresno State faculty/staff, Alumni Association members and seniors; and $2, Fresno State and University High School students. Prices on the day of the event increase by $2 for general admission, faculty, staff and Alumni Association members.
