Fresno State Chocolate Milk Team to air on KSEE’s Your Valley TV show Saturday, March 10

Where does chocolate milk come from? Not from brown cows … that’s for sure.

At least that is what the “Fresno State Chocolate Milk Investigative Reporters Team” found out during a tour of the University Farm recently for a story on their show, Your Valley TV. Their “expose” will air on KSEE24 NBC on Saturday, March 10 at 5 p.m.

Led by show host Alexis, 9, a fourth grader in Clovis, the chocolate milk team was given a tour of the University Agriculture Laboratory’s dairy processing unit by Ag Ambassador Kristen Heath, a senior majoring in agricultural communications at Fresno State. They also visited the dairy on the campus farm and saw close up some of the 150 university cows that produce Fresno State milk.

The team tells the story of how chocolate milk is made as explained by Kristen who works in the dairy processing unit where Fresno State ice cream also is made. “Reporters” Brianna, 7, a second grader also in Clovis and Aria, 9, a fourth grader in Fresno, helped Alexis “investigate” this pressing issue for young chocolate milk lovers. The show is produced by Sabrina Hill and Gaymarie Fontana of Your Valley TV, a local independent private organization that produces the weekly show for KSEE.

They learned things like an average of 200 gallons of Fresno State chocolate milk a month is produced on campus and that 10 percent of Fresno State’s milk is internally used for processing by the campus farm’s dairy industry into pasteurized milk, chocolate milk, cheese, ice cream and butter. The remaining 90 percent goes to California Dairies, Inc. for processing.

The team’s story winds up at the Fresno State Farm Market where the chocolate milk and other student-produced products may be purchased from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.

“Fresno State’s Farm Market is a jewel of Central California,” Fontana said. “We are excited about featuring it on Your Valley TV.”

The Farm Market is located on the southeast corner of Chestnut and Barstow avenues and remains open while road construction for the Save Mart Center is under way. Access is from Barstow Avenue. For more information, call 559.278.4511.
