Social Work Conference is March 16

Multigenerational and Intergenerational Challenges in Social Work Practice is the theme of this year’s annual Social Work Conference, which will be held Friday, March 16, at the Ramada Inn in Fresno. More than 200 participants are expected to attend.

Social workers face multiple challenges as the number of persons living a full and extended life has dramatically increased and the number and diversity of multigenerational families continues to rise. Households of three or more generations living together are becoming more common today and changing the entire structure of life, such as raising a child, caring for elders, single parenthood, access to health care and the high costs of living and housing.

The Department of Social Work Education at California State University, Fresno will facilitate the conference to bring together leaders in health and human services throughout the San Joaquin Valley to identify key challenges of multigenerational practice and offer new perspectives for the social work community.

Dr. Nancy Hooyman, dean emeritus in the School of Social Work and gerontology professor at the University of Washington, will present the opening keynote address on “A Multigenerational Paradigm for Gerontological Social Work Education.” Dr. John Capitman, executive director of the Central Valley Health Policy Institute and professor of public health at Fresno State, will present the afternoon keynote on “U.S. Chronic Care Financing Creates Eldercare Disparities: Implications for Families and Caregivers.”

Fees for the one-day conference are $100 for professionals and $40 for students. Groups of five or more from the same agency will receive a discount of $90 per person. The fee includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Six continuing education units will be offered for MFTs and LCSWs for an additional fee of $15. For more information, call559.278.3992 or visit the Department of Social Work Education’s Web site at: www.csufresno.edu/socialwork.
