Business team takes second, fourth in regional HR competition

The Craig School of Business at California State University, Fresno placed second and fourth at the Regional HRGames and Student Conference in Fresno, April 27-28.

Seven teams competed, representing the Society for Human Resource Management’s seven-state Pacific West Region.

The HRGames uses the “Jeopardy” TV show format in which students’ knowledge in all areas of management practices, employee selection, labor and employee relations, compensation and benefits, training and development, and safety and health is tested.

“The amount of information these students master is truly remarkable,” stated Dr. Rudy Sanchez, adviser and coach for the teams.

Fresno State team members are Yinmun Chi, Trisha Pfister, and Suzy Kazaryan of Fresno, Kacie O’Dell and Amy Van Laar of Clovis, and Ashley Pinley of Quartz Hill.

Other teams were from Boise State, Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, San Jose State, Stanislaus State and the University of Hawaii.

The second place team members (Chi, Pfister, Van Laar) competed against Stanislaus State in the championship round. The fourth place team (Kazaryan, O'Dell, Pinley) were within a few points of third place.

To compete at the regional level, teams had to place in the top five places at the California State Games held at Fresno State in February.

Fresno State teams have competed in all seven years of Regional Competition and in two of those years went on to win the National Competition. Fresno teams have competed in all 15 years of state competition, with at least one team capturing a top three position.

The team was coached by faculty members Sanchez, Diane Decker and Dr. Jill Bradley of the Craig School of Business.
