Levine wins Psychological Association award

The Western Psychological Association has named Dr. Robert Levine, professor of psychology at California State University, Fresno, as winner of the 2007 Outstanding Teaching Award.

He will presented the award at the WPA annual conference in Vancouver today (May 4). WPA is the largest psychological association, encompassing of all fields of psychology, for the Western region of the United States and Canada.

Levine, a Fresno State faculty member since 1974, recently won the top teaching award at Fresno State, the Provost’s 2007 Excellence in Teaching Award.

He specializes in social psychology. He is the author of three books. His first, “A Geography of Time” (1997), was the subject of feature stories around the world, including Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine, CNN, the BBC, ABC's Primetime, and NPR's All Things Considered and Marketplace. His recent book, “The Power of Persuasion: How We’re Bought and Sold” (2003) has been translated into seven languages.

Levin holds a bachelor's degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1967, a master's degree from Florida State University and a Ph.D. in personality/social psychology from New York University in 1974.

He has published many articles in professional journals as well as articles in trade periodicals such as Discover, American Demographics, The New York Times and American Scientist.

At Fresno State, he has served as chair of the Psychology Department and as associate dean of the College of Science and Mathematics. He also has served as a visiting professor at Universidade Federal Fluminense in Niteroi, Brazil, at Sapporo Medical University in Japan, and at Stockholm University in Sweden.
