Last night’s shooting at the University Village apartments near Fresno State was a senseless tragedy that affects all of us in the university community, especially with the memories of the Virginia Tech shootings so fresh in all our minds.

Our emergency team – myself, senior administrators, Auxiliary Services and our University Police Department – coordinated with the Fresno Police Department through the night to protect the campus, provide online alerts and updates about the shooting and immediate help to students.

Our response included relocation to campus of students displaced from their apartments during the police investigation. Sleeping accommodations and food were made available.

Our counseling staff also responded, helping students from University Village work through their emotions in the wake of the shooting. Counseling services are always available on campus to anyone – students, faculty or staff – in need.

The University Police Department is confident that Fresno Police Department has the suspect contained and the situation under control. We are conducting classes even as we are working to help all our students who were there and all other students affected by this sad incident so near our campus. 

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this tragedy.
