Huge crane arrives for library work

A huge new “visitor” arrived today at Fresno State. It is a 190-foot crane for the steel work at the Madden Library construction project.

The crane, which has a 100-ton capacity, arrived in three pieces. It will be assembled on site and the steel construction work will begin on Wednesday, May 16. The work will start on the east side of the new library basement and move from east to west.

The steel work for the four-story building is expected to be completed by mid-July.

Flagmen will be on site in the area when the crane is operating to direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

At 335,316 square feet, the new Henry Madden Library will be the largest library in the California State University’s 23-campus system and the largest academic library between Southern California and Bay Area. It also will be Fresno State’s largest academic building.

The $105-million project will be completed in late 2008.
