Memorial trust fund for slain former student

At a vigil Tuesday night for Brant Daniels, the 19-year-old former Fresno State student killed Monday, university students announced that a trust fund has been set up.

The memorial fund was established by Saints Rest Missionary Baptist Church to assist with funeral expenses and to help pay for the education of Daniels’ younger siblings, announced Brandon Wright, a business major and friend of Daniels, at the vigil.

Donations can be made to Saints Rest Missionary Baptist Church through July 31. Checks should have “In Memory of Brant Daniels” on the memo line. Saints Rest is located at 1550 E Florence Ave, Fresno, CA, 93706.

About 400-plus persons attended the vigil service Tuesday night in the Free Speech Area on campus, designed to mark the exact moment Daniels died 24 hours earlier after a shooting at University Village Apartments, an independent housing enterprise located off campus, across from Bulldog Stadium on Barstow.

A moment of silence was observed at 11:55 pm., the time Daniels was pronounced dead and 19 balloons were release in his memory. Flowers, balloons, cards, posters and various gifts adorned a display of photos of Daniels on the stage, and were later moved by students to Daniels’ apartment door.

Rev. Shane Scott of Saints Rest Baptist Church in West Fresno officiated at the vigil which was attended by members of Daniels family who came to Fresno from South Central Los Angeles yesterday. Brant’s mother Lorna Daniels, who has eight other children, thanked those who attended the vigil.

Also among several speakers who eulogized Daniels were Dr. Paul Oliaro, vice president for student affairs and dean of students, and Dr. James Walton, chair of the English Department.
