Students set records in ReadFresno project

Students in two classes at California State University, Fresno set records for the number of books collected and funds raised for ReadFresno as part of the service-learning project in their marketing classes this spring.

Dr. Skip Sherwood, a retired professor of marketing who is in charge of the acquisition and distribution of books for ReadFresno, praised the students for their volunteer efforts.

One team of students from faculty member Guy Decatrel's marketing class worked on three book drives with local elementary schools. They delivered 9,000 useable children's books to the United Way on April 29.

“This is by far the most books ever collected for ReadFresno by a single team of students,” said Sherwood.

Students involved in this project were Luvpreet Atwal, Samantha Avants, Jered Cox, Dina Josan, Brian Menge and Dianna Morgan.

Students from Alan Canton's marketing class held a fundraising bowling event called Bowling for Books and, with the help of some sponsors from Kerman, raised and donated a total of $2,575. No marketing team has ever come close to raising that amount, Sherwood said.

Those students included Jill Garcia, Daniel McWells, Heidi Stark and Katie Yager.

Since its inception three years ago, ReadFresno has distributed almost 75,000 books to reading programs targeting low income and disadvantaged youth.
