 Dr.
Michael Jenkins, chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at
the University of Detroit Mercy, has been named dean of the College of
Engineering at California State University, Fresno.
Jenkins is internationally recognized for his work in standards and
codes for advanced materials. He has expertise in the thermomechanical
behavior of composite and monolithic structural ceramics, damage
mechanics and experimental mechanics.
His current research is in measurement and interpretation of the
mechanical properties of monolithic and composite structural ceramics at
elevated temperatures, including tension, flexure and fracture
resistance.
Before joining the University of Detroit Mercy in 2003, Jenkins served
at the University of Washington, Seattle as faculty and associate chair
in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
His professional background includes industrial and governmental
positions, including work as a development staff member and research
engineer at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, as well as
project engineer at PACCAR Technical Center in Washington.
He is actively involved in several professional societies related to his
field of mechanical engineering, is the co-author of a textbook in
progress on applied fracture mechanics and has authored numerous book
chapters, articles and presentations.
Jenkins received his bachelor’s degree from Marquette University, his
master’s from Purdue University and his Ph.D. from the University of
Washington. He also completed a postdoctoral Fellowship at the
University of Tokyo.
He will arrive on campus this summer. He succeeds acting College of
Engineering dean Dr. Andrew Hoff. |
