A free pass on parking

Offering free one-day parking passes Monday at Fresno State was Kremen School of Education Dean Paul Beare. In a move to help alleviate traffic tie-ups at Maple and Shaw avenues that occur each year on the first day of classes, Beare purchased 300 one-day permits and distributed them to students.

Stephanie Mattos was one of the happy students who received a free permit, which sell for $3, and an accompanying note promoting the “exciting profession of teaching.”

Fresno State had issued warnings starting a week ago about potential delays at the beginning of the fall semester. University Police Department officials said traffic was heavy and parking tight, but successful overall. When reports of traffic congestion occurred, University Police responded immediately with personnel to help alleviate the situation.

Campus officials reminded those coming to campus that there is ample parking, but drivers may have to park some distance away from classes and offices, and they should allow time to reach their destination.
