Fall Fitness Festival Sept. 25 encourages healthy lifestyle

The Student Recreation Center at California State University, Fresno is introducing its first “Fall Fitness Festival” on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the Satellite Student Union. The festival is a major component in a university campaign to promote fitness and wellness among its students and employees.

The festival, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., will be held in the Satellite Student Union (SSU) on Maple and San Ramon avenues instead of the Rec Center because its layout allows for various exhibits and demonstrations, said Maia Jost, assistant director in charge of fitness programs for the Student Rec Center.

“This festival is bringing all fitness related campus entities to one central location to educate the campus about fitness opportunities,” Jost said. All sports clubs, fitness and recreation majors, and employee assistance programs have been invited to participate. “This is an opportunity for the campus to unite and get fit.”

The event will primarily showcase the group fitness classes offered to the campus community. That day’s classes will be conducted at the SSU to encourage viewership and participation.

Jost said the Rec Center’s most popular classes are BODYPUMP®, BODYCOMBAT® and BODYFLOW®, which are licensed from Les Mills International. Rounding out the schedule for the day will be B.A.T. (Butt, Abs and Thighs), and BOOT CAMP.

Additionally, community organizations will be present to inform participants of ways they can be involved in fitness-related projects off campus, such as Team in Training (Leukemia and Lymphoma Society), the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and a grassroots LIVESTRONG fundraising campaign.

“These three charities are strongly fitness based and will be taking sign-ups from students, faculty and staff to support upcoming events,” Jost said. “Everyone on campus should know what healthy opportunities are available to them here on campus and in our community. We want to show that giving back to the community can be a healthy life choice, physically and otherwise. “

The Rec Center has enlisted various co-sponsors and supporters: Athletics, Kennel Bookstore, Dining Services, Wellness Services, Employee Assistance and Development, the Division of Student Affairs, USU Productions and Auxiliary Corporations.

The Student Recreation Center opened its doors in February 2006. Since then 65 percent of the student population has used the facility.

Besides the group classes, the center offers personal training. In addition, the campus Intramurals Program is now under the umbrella of the Student Recreation Center.
