Huge library walls going up

Work began Tuesday at the Madden Library construction project at Fresno State on the placement of 64 concrete wall panels. The panels, each weighing 15 tons, are 14 feet high, 30 feet wide and six inches thick.

The work is expected to continue for five days. The panels will be installed on the south, east and west walls. The north wall will be glass. A massive hydraulic crane with a boom that extends to about 150 feet is placing the panels. The crane's base is 80 long and 12 feet wide.

The walkway between the Library and University Center will be closed all this week as the wall installation is in progress.
