Stop the Hate activities on campus

Observances of "Stop the Hate, Stop the Violence: Build a Culture of Peace" will be held Sept. 30 and Oct. 2 at California State University, Fresno.

A cultural, musical and floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30 - his 138th birthday - in the campus Peace Garden located north of the Madden Library.

The program will include Fresno State President John D. Welty and speakers from several peace and interfaith community groups. Students of Archana Banglore and Leasandre Ayery will perform classical Indian and Javanes dances. Children from Bal Gokolam from the Hindu Temple of Fresno will sing nationalist and patriotic songs.

Performers under the direction of Urmi Choudhry will sing songs that were Gandhi's favorites.

After the program will be garlanding of the Gandhi statue in the Peace Garden. Those who wish to participate are asked to bring flowers.

On Tuesday, Oct. 2, a candlelight vigil for world peace and observance of International Day of Non-Violence, as declared by the United Nations in honor of Gandhi, will be held in the Peace Garden starting at sunset. The documentary film about Gandhi's 1930 "Salt March" against British rule in India will be shown.

The Stop the Hate events are free and open to the public.
