Fresno State exhibits faculty member Doug Hansen’s watercolors

Heirlooms book cover artAn exhibit of watercolor illustrations by Doug Hansen, an award-winning artist and an associated professor of art and design at California State University, Fresno, opens Thursday, Nov. 1, in the Lyles Gallery of the Speech Arts building at Fresno State.

“Picturing Heirlooms” will display illustrations from farmer and author Mas Masumoto’s new book, “Heirlooms: Letters from a Peach Farmer.” Since 2002, Hansen has produced illustrations to illuminate Masumoto’s monthly column in The Fresno Bee, often using artifacts from Masumoto’s Parlier-area farm to capture the proper mood.

Hansen’s artistry has evolved into a distinctive style of illustration that lets readers know at a glance they accompany Masumoto’s words. “Heirlooms” is the second book on which Masumoto and Hansen have collaborated. The first was “Letters to the Valley,” published in 2004.

In addition to a private career as an artist acclaimed for work in several art forms, Hansen won awards for his illustrations while on The Fresno Bee’s editorial art staff. He left The Bee in 2002 to join the Fresno State faculty after obtaining his Master of Fine Arts from the university.

“Picturing Heirlooms” will be mounted through Nov. 28 in the Lyles Gallery. A reception is scheduled 5-8 p.m. Nov. 15.

The Lyles Gallery is open noon-5 p.m. weekdays and one hour prior to curtain when there are theatrical productions in the adjacent John Wright and Dennis and Cheryl Woods theatres.

There are two other art exhibit spaces on campus:

Conley Gallery (Phebe Conley Art Building) – Graduate student Donna Ross Sciacqua’s “Saint Celia” closes Friday, Nov. 2. Opening Nov. 8 is an exhibit of paintings by grad student L.K.
