Theatre production ‘Doubt’ has double premier Nov. 2

Hayley Galbraith, right, plays Sister Aloysius and Miles Villanueva is Father Flynn in the drama "Doubt," debuting Nov. 2 in the Dennis and Cheryl Woods Theatre at Fresno State.“Doubt,” a drama evoking child-abuse scandals that have rocked the Catholic Church in the United States, makes its Fresno premiere Friday, Nov. 2, in the newly named Dennis and Cheryl Woods Theatre at California State University, Fresno.

“Doubt” is directed by Kathleen McKinley, a professor in the Department of Theatre Arts at Fresno State. Miles Villaneuva plays a priest who may be too close to one of the junior high students in the parish school and Hayley Galbraith and Rhiannon Fernandaz play nuns suspicious of the priest’s actions.

The presentation of John Patrick Shanley’s much-praised drama, which debuted in 2004, is University Theatre’s second production of its 2007-08 season.

It will be staged in what formerly was the Arena Theatre, part of the Speech Arts Building. It was renamed Oct. 19 in honor of the Woods’ whose gift to the university triggered a matching gift that allowed for substantial work to begin on refurbishing and modernizing the theater.

This production will benefit from new lighting equipment installed last spring. Improvements are scheduled for the Green Room and theater seating.

The curtain rises on “Doubt” at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2. Additional performances are scheduled at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, and Nov. 6-10. A matinee will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4. A reception paying tribute to the Woods’ generosity is scheduled after Saturday’s performance.

Tickets are $15 general; $13 for Fresno State faculty, staff and Alumni Association members, seniors (60 and older) and non-Fresno State students; $8 Fresno State students. No one under 5 will be admitted.

Tickets are available from the University Theatre Box Office from noon to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday near the north entrance to the Speech Arts Building (5201 N. Maple Ave.): telephone 559.278.2216; fax 559.278.7215; online www.csufresno.edu/Theatre.
