International Education Week is Nov. 13-16

California State University, Fresno is planning a full schedule of events celebrating International Education Week, Nov. 13-16.

The event showcases study abroad and exchange programs for interested students. Panel discussions and speakers are scheduled throughout the week so students to can learn about the experiences of those who have recently returned from overseas.

The programs are free and open to the public. Events include:

Tuesday, Nov. 13

  • International Coffee Hour: Viraj Parikh, an undergraduate student from India, will discuss homeland and its cultural heritage from 2 to 3 p.m. in the University Student Union, Room 312-314.

Wednesday, Nov. 14

  • Study Abroad Table: Marcia Romsa, a study abroad adviser in the International Programs Office, will distribute information and answer questions on all study abroad opportunities from 11 a.m. to noon in the Free Speech Area.
     

  • Study Abroad Orientation for new faculty: A panel of four Fresno State faculty members engaged in international activities will discuss the nature, mechanics and the value of their international development experiences from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Education Building, Room 140.

Thursday, Nov. 15

  • Nationally broadcast audio conference: Dr. Riall Nolan from Purdue University will make a presentation oriented toward faculty members who are interested in designing study abroad courses and on-campus international educational activities for diverse groups of students. His lecture is titled “Keys to streamline and enhance study abroad programs” and will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. in Family and Food Science, Room 112.
     

  • Egypt: Dr. El Kharbawy, assistant professor in the Department of Art and Design, will talk about his recent trip to Egypt and proposed partnership with the American University of Cairo from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the University Business Center, Room 191.

Friday, Nov. 16

  • Study Abroad Table: Philip Lindblad, an undergraduate student at Fresno State who studied abroad in Japan for a full year, will distribute information and answer questions on study abroad opportunities, specifically with the National Student Exchange Program, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Free Speech Area.
     

  • Cineculture: “Invisible Children,” a documentary by three college students from Southern California to expose the fear and pain of thousands of Acholi children who struggle daily to flee the brutality of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in Northern Uganda, will be shown from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. in McLane Hall, Room 121.

International Education Week is a sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education. Hosted by the nation’s schools and college campuses, the week is a time to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange programs. It is also a time to reflect about America’s place in the world and to assess how universities are preparing students for success in a global environment.
