Medieval classic ‘La Celestina’ opens Friday

University Theatre’s production of “La Celestina,” a classic medieval tragicomedy by Fernando de Rojas, will begin its two-week run at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at California State University, Fresno.

The play’s focus is on noble lovers set against an underworld of corrupt servants, prostitutes and pimps hoping to exploit their passions.

The University Theatre production is the premiere of a new translation by Terry Miller, a professor of theatre arts at Fresno State, who also did the stage adaptation. He was introduced to the work by Dr. Jacinta Amaral, a professor in Fresno State’s Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Linguistics.

The all-student cast includes Vanessa Pereda in the title role, Carly Oliver and Adam Schroeder as the lovers, Miles Villanueva, Yosef Mahmood, Danielle Jorn and Megan Gilmore.

To help tell the story Jeff Hunter, an assistant professor of theatre arts, designed an imposing and flexible set. Other faculty involved in the production are Brent Foland (costume designer) and Izzy Einsidler (lighting). Dana Cooper, who also is in the cast, is the hair and make-up designer. An original song was composed for “La Celestina” by Aarne Kela, a graduate student in music.

Performance dates at the John Wright Theatre within the Speech Arts Building are Friday through Sunday, Dec. 7-9, and Dec. 11-15. Curtain is at 8 p.m. except on Sunday, when it’s 2 p.m.

Tickets: $15, general, $13, Fresno State faculty, staff, and Alumni Association members (ID required), seniors (60 and older) and non-Fresno State students; $8, Fresno State students. No one under 5 will be admitted.
