University Police Department at Fresno State will participate in the annual “Avoid the 17” program starting today (Dec. 14) and continuing through Jan. 1, 2008.

The campaign involves 17 law enforcement agencies in Fresno and Madera counties and more than 42 law enforcement agencies in the Central Valley that join together to crack down on drunk driving.

Last year, UPD officers made 10 DUI arrests and nearly 600 drunk drivers taken off the road in Fresno and Madera counties.

Funding for the program is from the California Office of Traffic and Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
