Fresno State’s donated denim helps insulate 24 houses of Gulf Coast hurricane victims

From left in the picture: Kathy Paez, Andrew Watson, Shawna Blair and Christine Fluter.More than 12,000 denim pieces were collected by California State University, Fresno students during a month-long campaign to help victims of Hurricane Katrina – enough denim to provide insulation for 24 houses.

Local campaign efforts, which were organized by Fresno State’s USU Productions, joined the national "Cotton. From Blue to Green” denim drive.

The donations – jean pants, skirts and jackets – are being shredded and turned into insulation that will be used to assist in helping to rebuild hurricane-damaged homes in Louisiana.

Denim was collected by Fresno State clubs and organizations and at several drop-off points on campus and at local high schools, churches, alterations stores, Jamba Juice and Starbucks locations.

Students sort through piles of denim at the recycling center in Fresno. In 2006, the denim drive nationwide collected 14,566 pieces of denim.

For more information on the Fresno State collection, contact Shawna Blair at 559.278.2741 or shblair@csufresno.edu.
