The Ethics Center at Fresno
State has announced its spring 2008 ethics lecture series line-up, which
will focus on science and technology.
The lectures will take place on Wednesdays from noon to 12:50 p.m. in
the Alice Peters Auditorium in the University Business Center. Lectures
will include:
Feb. 6 – “What is This I’m eating?” – Biologist Jim Prince, a
professor of molecular genetics at Fresno State, will discuss the
science, ethics, risks and benefits of genetically modified food.
Feb. 20 – "Urban Beavers, Suburban Bears, and Household Geckos:
On Sharing our Habitat with Wildlife" – Madhu Katti, Fresno State
assistant professor of biology , will talk about how humans share their
habitat with a variety of non-human animals and how both have adapted
while co-evolving with other species.
March 12 – “The Art, Mystery, and Controversy of Stem Cell
Culture” - Jason Bush, an assistant professor of biology at Fresno
State, will address stem cell research and the fundamental concepts and
technical advancements affecting this complex topic.
April 23 – “The Stem Cell Debate: Religious and Ethical Issues” -
Ted Peters, a professor of systematic theology at Pacific Lutheran
Theological Seminary in Berkeley, will discuss the religious and ethical
issues that arise in stem cell research and biotechnology. The talk will
be based in part on his recent book, “The Stem Cell Debate.”
