Voter registration for the
Feb. 5 Presidential Primary Election in California ends Tuesday, Jan.
22, so California State University, Fresno’s Associated Students Inc. (ASI)
will sign up voters at the Free Speech Area that day from 9 a.m. to 1
p.m.
ASI Director of Legislative Esmeralda Santos, the leader of the campus
volunteer registration effort, sees the 2008 election decisions as
historic. “From higher education funding, to the economy, to the war in
Iraq and possibly war in Iran, we understand that this election matters
and that our votes matter,” Santos said.
Free coffee and donuts will be served from 9 to 11 a.m. and pizza and
drinks from noon to 1 p.m. to encourage registration.
Around campus, the volunteers have been talking in classrooms in an
attempt to register at least 200 students before Tuesday’s deadline.
Last year, 490 Fresno State students were registered by ASI. The effort
is part of the California State Student Association’s statewide campaign
for voter education, registration and mobilization of university
students.
“During the 2004 election, young voter participation increased 11
percentage points,’ said ASI President Juan Pablo Moncayo. “In districts
where students were targeted, participation increased again during the
2005, 2006 and 2007 elections. In 2008, we hope to show that the rise in
young voter participation is not just a blip.
