The new Immigration Film
Series at California State University, Fresno will present “Lone Star”
at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in McLane Hall 161.
The 135-minute movie, which is free and open to the public, stars
Elizabeth Pena, Kris Kristofferson and Matthew McConaughey. A discussion
will follow the screening.
The film is the first in the Immigration Film Series, which is sponsored
by Fresno State’s Central Valley Latin American Project, the Chicano and
Latin American Studies Department and the College of Social Sciences.
Released in 1996, the film portrays a Texas border town, where people of
different ethnicities grapple with questions of history, identity,
economic and political power, education and the future of the town.
“Director John Sayles employs a subtle directing style that seamlessly
leaps in time and location as Sheriff Sam Deeds investigates a
30-year-old murder,” said Dr. Ramon Sanchez, a Chicano and Latin
American Studies professor who is the event organizer.
