Valley artist's sculptures to be featured at Fresno State

The bronze sculptures of graduate student Claudia Nolan will be on display in the Conley Gallery at California State University, Fresno on Feb. 28 to March 7.

Nolan, a painter, sculptor and computer artist, investigates the contemporary dilemmas of a fast-paced world in her exhibition, "Contravening Postulates." She is completing her master's degree.

The exhibition features playful and serious bronze sculptures with formal appeal and intimate scale. Nolan said she loves the tactility and salience of sculpture, which remind her that life is more rooted in the Earth than in cyberspace.

Nolan started her career as a painter and began regularly selling her work in 1965. Her facility for portraits led to positions with Phoenix Archive, Sierra On-Line's ImagiNation Network and AOL. After a career of more than 30 years in commercial and computer art, Nolan retired and returned to school, where she earned her bachelor's degree in art in 2003 at Fresno State. In 2005, she was selected to create a statue of 20th century social reformer and peace advocate Jane Addams for the campus Peace Garden.

A reception for "Contravening Postulates" will be held March 1, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. There will also be an Art Hop on March 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. Both are free and open to the public. During the events, parking is free in Lot B, just south of the Phebe Conley Art Building.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Conley Gallery is located in the Conley Art Building, which is accessible from Maple or Woodrow avenues, north of Shaw Avenue.
