M. Mason, a senior mass communication and journalism major from Lake
Elsinore, has been elected president of Associated Students Inc. (ASI)
at California State University, Fresno. He starts his term as president
on June 1.
During the three-day election, which ended Thursday, ballots were cast
by
1,371 of Fresno State's 22,000 students.
In other election results, students voted against the Instructionally
Related Activity fee referendum, 777-412. The vote is a nonbinding
response to a proposed $70 per semester student fee increase. Of that
amount, $50 is proposed to fund Fresno State athletics; the remaining
$20 would cover academic enhancements.
In the presidential race, Mason tallied 474 votes to beat out Walter
Ramirez
(367 votes), Jared Lindo (271 votes) and Oscar Perez (183 votes).
"I plan on being able to make everyone feel involved in ASI," Mason
said.
"Obviously, not all students are going to be unified, but if you can get
the majority of them to say something, that's the major thing. We have
to figure out a way to keep our students involved."
Mason follows two-term ASI president Juan Pablo Moncayo, who is
graduating in May.
Lauren Johnson, a junior business major, was elected vice president of
finance (with 836 votes) over second-runner Ashik Ahmed (271 votes).
The following students won seats to the ASI Senate: Jessica Sweeten
(Agriculture), Paul Herrera (Arts & Humanities), Graham Wahlberg
(Engineering), Jamie Ruddy (Science & Mathematics), and Anton Bortolussi
(Social Sciences). Winning at-large seats are Sarait Martinez, Beatriz
Campuzano, Craig Parks, Jorge Hernandez, Sandra Flores, Ryan Welch and
Eduardo Rodriguez.
