Sanger, Clovis schools top list of Character Education Awards

The Bonner Center for Character Education at California State University, Fresno recognized 25 elementary schools with its 21st Annual Virtues and Character Recognition Awards, given to schools for exemplary attention to character education.

The Sanger Unified School District topped the list with 10 schools honored; Clovis Unified followed with six schools.

The awards were presented Wednesday during the Kremen School of Education and Human Development’s 24th Annual Conference on Character and Civic Education at the Fresno Convention Center.

Jacques Benninga director of the Bonner Center for Character Education, said the schools were recognized because, “each of these schools promotes core ethical values as the basis of good character; each fosters an intentional approach to its core values in all phases of school life; and, each school provides students opportunities for moral action.”

Winning Valley schools for 2008 include three Tulare County schools, one Madera County school, and 21 Fresno county schools (representing Central Unified, Clovis Unified, Fresno Unified and Sanger Unified):
