Fresno State is taking
another green step forward by serving food on campus using hot beverage
cups and lids, napkins, small plates and beverage sleeves that will be
composted by the University Agricultural Laboratory.
California State University, Fresno’s University Dining Services begins
on May 2 to phase in environmentally friendly materials produced by
EcoProducts, a Boulder, Colo., manufacturer of products made of
recyclable paper and corn-based plastics.
The products will be used at all events catered by University Dining
Services and in the Bucket Grill and Pub, which it operates on campus.
The compostable items will become available to customers at some of the
other eating establishments around campus that are directed by
University Dining Services – University Dining Hall (resident student
dining), Vintage Room (table-service), USU Snack Bar and Satellite
Student Union Snack Bar.
After use, the new products will be sent to the University Farm to be
composted with other material from around the campus.
“While this is the first rollout of these environmentally friendly
products, University Dining Services also will be including dining
utensils – forks, knives, spoons – and to-go containers in the future,”
said Brent Hansen, marketing coordinator for the Fresno State Auxiliary
Corporations.
He added: “This is a major green initiative that we believe is a model
for other campuses. We are purchasing top-quality products that look and
perform just like the nonrecyclable utensils they replace. We also
appreciate the cooperation of the University Farm in composting these
products as part of its expanding operation.”
