Sam Frank, a graduating
senior at California State University, Fresno, received the Student
Leadership Award at the recent CSU Alcohol Conference in Long Beach.
Frank is co-chair of the campus Alcohol Safety Council Student
Subcommittee and received the award for his work in alcohol education at
Fresno State. This is the fifth year in a row that Fresno State has been
recognized for its alcohol education efforts at the conference.
The university has been making strides in promoting safe alcohol message
since 2003 as part of the Social Norms program. In its efforts to reduce
alcohol abuse and alcohol-related misconduct by college students, the
university identifies strategies to change the misperceptions students
have regarding college drinking.
The Social Norms program is one of several health promotion programs
offered through Wellness Services as part of Fresno State’s University
Health and Psychological Services.
"We hope our efforts will encourage students to stay safe and healthy
throughout their college experience," said Kathy Yarmo, wellness
coordinator for University Health and Psychological Services.
Wellness Services offers the Fall and Spring Wellness Fair, the annual
Wellness Challenge, individualized nutritional counseling, unique and
innovative activities around alcohol safety, the Wellness Ambassador
program, and freshmen and transfer student orientations.
