State University, Fresno student Susan Vang, who provided more than
1,000 hours of service in the last year, was named the University
Student Volunteer of the Year yesterday at the 40th annual awards
luncheon hosted by the Volunteer Center of Fresno County.
Vang is a senior sociology major and participant in the American
Humanics program at Fresno State.
She was cited for her volunteer work with the United Way of Fresno
County, where she helped research the training needs of local nonprofit
organizations. She served at Lao Veterans of America, where she
addressed barriers to public transportation for Southeast Asians in
Fresno. She also provided support for fundraising efforts at the
American Heart Association.
In nominating Susan for the award, Dr. Matthew Jendian wrote, “As the
director of the American Humanics program, I’m privileged to work with
outstanding students, but Susan is among our best. She stands as a model
of excellence in everything she has participated in.”
In addition to winning the award, Vang also received a $1,500
scholarship from the Marc and Marjorie Radin Community Service
Scholarship Fund.
