Summer hours for the Rue and
Gwen Gibson Farm Market at California State University, Fresno begin
Saturday, May 17, as the university enterprise that features student
products looks forward to two big events: Commencement and Memorial Day
weekend.
The summer hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. - 7 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.
- 6 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.
The fresh meat counter – the “Bulldog Chop shop” – will be open Thursday
through Saturday beginning May 22, in time for Memorial Day the
following weekend. The market’s perennial
favorite, Fresno State sweet corn, may make an early debut this year,
possibly by Memorial Day, said Jennifer Sobieralski, market manager.
“These next two weekends will be big, especially now that Chestnut
Avenue has reopened,” Sobieralski said.
The Chop Shop will feature fresh spring lamb, rib and loin chops,
shanks, ground round, beef steak and chop varieties, and pork steak and
chop varieties.
Fresno State’s award-winning olive oil also is expected this month,
Sobieralski said, and Fresno State Honey returned to shelves in 12-ounce
and 16-ounce jars.
The market also is gearing up for its 2nd annual Fresno State Farm
Festival that will be held in the parking lot on June 21 to thank its
loyal customers and meet new ones.
Weekly wine tastings will continue on Thursday and Fridays from 4 to 6
p.m. with plans under way to expand the tastings through the weekend.
Ice cream tastings are held the second Tuesday of each month. Public
tours of the University Farm are held on Fridays from 4 to 5 p.m.
The student-operated market sells farm-fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts,
dairy products, meat, wine, plants and a variety of food products grown
on the farm and processed by students. Proceeds from Farm Market sales
are used to make improvements on the farm and enhance students’ learning
experiences.
