Fresno State Bulldogs in the College World Series 2008

UPDATES

A celebration for champions!!

The Fresno State baseball team basked in the adoration of a more than 11,500 fans – most of them wearing red – Thursday evening at a lively celebration for the 2008 NCAA Baseball Champion Bulldogs.

The fans – some who waited two hours in the afternoon heat – couldn’t wait to see their ’Dogs, and when they did they showed lots of love.

An estimated 5,000 cheering men, women and children lined the parade route on Barstow and Cedar avenues near Beiden Field on the campus, and another 6,500 packed the stands and overflowed onto the field of the baseball park.

The fans were happy to greet the Bulldogs, who returned to Fresno Thursday afternoon after a convincing 6-1 win over the No. 8 Georgia Bulldogs on Wednesday in Omaha to claim the national title.

A Fresno Fire Department ladder truck with Timeout and several players aboard and sirens blazing and lights flashing lead the parade. When the entourage entered Beiden Field and the players hit the field, the crowd erupted, chanting “Fres-no State!

Applause filled the stadium as each of the players and coaches was introduced. Speakers praising the team and thanking fans included Fresno State President John D. Welty, Fresno Mayor Alan Autry, Associated Students President Mackee Mason and National Coach of the Year Mike Batesole.

Master of ceremonies Paul Loeffler, who broadcast most Bulldog baseball games during the year and from Omaha for KMJ 580 radio, asked several players to tell about their experiences during the season and in Omaha.

Following the program, a line of fans ringed the stadium concourse to get autographs from team members.

Hello, I have to say that you are the very best in all avenues of life! Born and raised a Miami Hurricane Baseball fan, all I can say is you are total class!! Thank you for the very best College World Series that I have ever watched! I turn 50 next March and enjoyed many a World Series before, but nothing like I saw you all perform! Thank you. Lee Robert Kousek (New York, NY)

I'm an alumnus of CSULB, and a current fan of Oregon State, and Western Oregon University baseball, but your guys (including Coach Batesole) made an outstanding showing for your baseball program, and the university itself during that grueling run to and through the CWS, against some very long odds.

I just have to say, "Well done, and congratulations. It was a great ride!" Go Bulldogs! – Harold Tiernan (Atlanta, GA)

This former Shafter resident is very proud to be from the Central Valley. My Dad, played one year at Fresno State in the late 1920s but the depression forced him to leave school and work to support his parents. He continued playing baseball on local valley teams. He would have been very proud of the Bulldog's accomplishment becoming the 2008 National Collegiate Baseball Champions. – Dr. Frank Ware (Anaheim, CA)

Congratulations to Mike Batesole and the entire Fresno State family on winning the CWS championship. I knew Mike when he was playing in the Dodgers' minor league system and remember he and Susie very well. The conduct and expertise of the team speaks well of Mike and FSU as well. WELL DONE!! – John Sellers (Winder, GA)

Congratulations on the NCAA Baseball Championship. I am just a sports fan and was rooting for the underdog. Great comeback and now you are in the history books. Well deserved!! – Lori Palano (Wichita, KS)

I just wanted to say congratulations to the Fresno State Baseball team and their tremendous accomplishment. As a WAC fan, specifically a Nevada Wolfpack fan, I followed the Bulldogs since they beat the Pack in the WAC tournament, and slowly let go of the disappointment and jumped on the bandwagon. Now, after weeks and weeks of tournament play, the names of every player on the Fresno State ballclub, as well as the ball club itself, has become a part of me. Please give the team my heartfelt congratulations. I now can say I've been a witness to two sporting miracles, one on ice in 1980, and now one on the turf of Omaha. Go Dogs!!! – Jim DeZerga (Nevada)

I just wanted to congratulate the school and the team on its NCAA Baseball National Championship. Your athletes represented your school so well! They showed courage, tenacity and respect for the game and other players. What great role models

Congratulations on a great win! Karel Kolker (Tulsa, OK)

Thank you for the wonderful experience of watching the men's baseball team triumph at the NCAA College World Series in Omaha. I had no prior connection to Fresno State but after watching all of their televised games, I now feel like a big fan and a very close friend. The Fresno State team spirit proved to be a very enlightening example in today's muddled sports world. Congratulations on a great team effort and an enlightened sports program. You will always have a championship attitude regardless of the scores. But this thrilling moment clearly goes to the "Underdog Bulldogs!" – Jon D. Elder (Monterey Park, CA)

Congratulations to the Fresno State Baseball team on the amazing win. I have always rooted for the football team and have now become a baseball fan also. What a wonderful win for your school and the Central Valley of California. I live in Lodi California. Congratulations! Edwin Wittmayer (Lodi, CA)

I live in Roswell New Mexico. I always support the West in baseball. Usually that means Arizona. I wasn't too pleased when the Bulldogs beat Arizona St. in the Super Regionals but I decided to support Fresno throughout the tourney. I have watched and played baseball for 30 years. I have never seen a better group of gamers at ANY level of baseball!!!

Detwiler (record breaker) playing with a completely torn ligament in his thumb and Mendonca with a dislocated left hand being the MVP. Bullpen pitching with all their heart. Just Amazing!!! I will be supporting Fresno next year and hope this program can continue its winning ways!!!

WAY TO GO BULLDOGS!!! David Garlinger (Roswell, NM)

Congrats from a Nevada Wolf Pack fan on your Victory. It was Extraordinary. Danny Hellman (Reno, NV)

I am a lifetime resident and fan of the University of Hawaii, which makes us a natural rival. Despite that fact, I'd like to be the very first Hawaii resident to congratulate the Fresno State baseball team for winning the national championship. I watched and cheered you on throughtout the post season!!! What an Awesome achievement! Brian Matsusaka (Hawaii)

How 'bout them BULDOGS!!!! I graduated from CSUF in 1992 and used to attend as many baseball, softball, football and basketball games as I could while attending CSUF. I watched the entire College World Series and have to say THANKS for the GREAT BIRTHDAY PRESENT BULLDOGS!!!!! YOU'RE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! Cheryl (Ross) Justice (Cottonwood, AZ)

Congratulations to the Bulldogs on winning the 2008 CWS! Congratulations to the university, the athletic department, coach Mike Batesole, his staff, and especially the players who won the hearts of Omaha and this 40 year plus Omaha native! Go Bulldogs!!! Jeff Palensky (Omaha, NE)

Good job guys. I was rooting for you. Greatest path to becoming champs ever. Maybe the phrase underdog should be changed to bulldog. J. Myers (Lombard, IL)

I am an Arizona State University alumni and fan. I have taken my son to the NCAA baseball regionals and super regionals in Tempe when they are here. We were disappointed when Fresno State knocked ASU out this year. While your team certainly deserves congratulations for their success, I am writing about their fans. We were at game 3 of the Tempe super regional this year. Your fans were a class act. They clearly supported their team in a positive manner, and did so in an admittedly hostile environment. Their positive attitude in support of their team was a contrast to other college fans, who seem to focus negative comments on the opposing team and fans. Their fans led my son and me to support your Bulldogs as we watched the College World Series. Athletics expose (not teach) character. Your school is fortunate to have such great character. Congratulations. – Steve Hrovat (Glendale, AZ)

My wife and I are fans of the Bulldogs baseball. Congratulations on going to the CWS. Go DOGS!! Dave and Marie (Fresno, CA)

I received this comment from a friend in Nebraska about Fresno State's baseball team. I think Dr. Welty would appreciate it.

"Yeah, Pat - the locals are all Bulldog fans right now. Their Cinderella tale captures the hearts of fans, and their modesty about their success insures their favor with the public here. As I said, they certainly have heart." Terry Ogden (Madera, CA)
