The Society for Human
Resource Management student chapter at California State University,
Fresno was awarded the society’s Triple Crown Award for its role in
advancing the profession, the nation’s only student chapter to do so.
The Fresno State chapter was recognized for winning the regional HR
Games, the Superior Merit Award and the Outstanding Student Chapter
Award at the society’s annual national conference June 21-25 in Chicago.
It’s the seventh straight year the chapter has won the merit award. The
chapter has a “proven track record of providing its members networking
and educational opportunities,” said Chuck Salvetti, the society’s
student programs manager.
“The level of excellence that our student leaders in the human resource
management program continually reach is a testament to their
professionalism and talent,” added Dr. Rudy J. Sanchez, the team’s
faculty adviser in the Craig School of Business.
In April, the Pacific West Regional Human Resources Management Games,
also known as the HR Games, was won by a Fresno State team composed of
Erik Holland of Hanford and Suzy Kazaryan and Trisha Pfister-Qvien, both
of Fresno. The trio beat two-time defending champion California State
University, Stanislaus en route to the title.
The “Jeopardy!”-style contest tests students’ knowledge of management
practices, employee selection, labor and employee relations,
compensation and benefits, training and development and safety and
health. The Fresno State team joined squads from Penn State University,
Utah State University, Virginia Commonwealth University and Indiana Tech
as regional champions.
Fresno State was one of 10 chapters from around the nation awarded
Outstanding Student Chapter recognition.
Students created a video to increase awareness and help improve chapter
recruitment and retention. The video included interviews, comments and
stories about why students should be involved with the organization.
Malyna Cha of Merced, Carlos Zertuche of Coarsegold and Maribel Nunez of
Biola spearheaded that effort.
