Ag pioneer, Fresno State benefactor Pat Ricchiuti Sr. dies

Pat Ricchiuti Sr.Longtime Fresno State friend and benefactor Pat Ricchiuti Sr. passed away Sunday after a brief illness, leaving a legacy of leadership and influence in agriculture and university athletics.

Fresno State agricultural programs benefited greatly from Mr. Ricchiuti’s involvement. Mr. Ricchiuti, 88, spent a lifetime in agriculture as a grower, packer and shipper of fruit and nuts. He was an agricultural pioneer who improved processes to maximize the quality of the agricultural products produced and shipped under his company’s name, P-R Farms.

His generous support created the Ricchiuti Chair of Viticulture Research Endowment Fund in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, allowing a professor the time and resources to conduct important research in viticulture. He was involved in Fresno State’s Ag One Foundation.

"Pat was an innovator whose life work resulted in significant accomplishments for agriculture in the region," said Fresno State Vice President for University Advancement Dr. Peter Smits. "He was a generous benefactor to the university who made sure his contributions addressed areas for which he deeply cared: agriculture and athletics. His selfless giving inspired other supporters and the impact of his gifts will provide student and research opportunities for years to come."

Mr. Ricchiuti and his wife, Frances Ricchiuti, have been major supporters of Bulldog athletics. Their contributions created the Ricchiuti Academic, Strength and Conditioning Center, used by student athletes for their academic achievement and physical conditioning.

The Ricchiuti Academic Center has been integral in meeting student-athlete needs as they progress through the academic program. The center provides study tables, a tutorial lab and a 40-station computer lab. The strength and conditioning center houses a 10,000-square-foot weight room and operates strength and conditioning programs.

"The Ricchiuti family has made a profound impact on the lives of countless student-athletes and coaches at Fresno  State," said Fresno State Athletic Director Thomas Boeh. "Pat has provided leadership in our community for many years, and his generosity will forever be felt by thousands of Bulldog faithful. To be sure, all of those associated with Fresno State Athletics will miss Pat sorely. Our condolences go out to the Ricchiuti family."

Mr. Ricchiuti also supported the Bulldog Foundation, the President’s Fund and the John Wright Theatre.
